in 1987, the mintage of the Britannia gold coin at 1 troy ounce was 92,000. In some years, the minting of the Britannia gold ounce was done only in polished plate or as sets. In the early years, the minting of the Britannia gold coin weighing 1 ounce was made of a red gold alloy of gold & copper of 22 carats with a fineness of 916.66 / 1,000, followed in 2012 by a yellow gold alloy of gold, silver & copper. Since 2013, the Britannia has been produced as a fine gold coin with a fineness of 999.9 / 1,000 or 24 carats. The diameter of the Britannia gold ounce is about 32.69 mm, the thickness is about 2.78 mm. The edge of the 1 oz Britannia gold coin is fluted.

The motif of Britannia on the motif side of the gold coins of the same name means the personification of the British Isles. From 1987 to 1996, the same motif of Britannia was always depicted on the gold coins of the same name. This consists of the standing Britannia with trident, shield and helmet. The motifs are always framed by a serrated edge. In the border inscription one recognizes the name "BRITANNIA", the year of mintage "2023", fine weight and fineness "1oz 999.9 FINE GOLD". Below the briannia, a closer look reveals the name "NATHAN". This is the name of the artist Philip Nathan, who designed the motif for this coin in 1987.

This additional anti-counterfeiting feature is composed as follows: 

• On the lower left side there is a circle with fluted content. Depending on the perspective from which this is viewed, either a padlock or a trident can be seen.
• The background of the Britannia is wavy fluted. 
• Between the outer circle and the wavy background is a very small printed Latin lettering. This lettering reads "DECUS ET TUTAMEN", which translates to "SILENCE AND DEFENSE".
• The shield of the Britannia is also fluted. 

Face of the Britannia Gold 1 Ounce 2023 Charles III.

The value side features the portrait of King Charles III without the crown. These gold ounces were produced at the time when Charles III had not yet been crowned and thus was not yet officially the King of Great Britain. Stamped on the edge of the coin is the face value "100 POUNDS", the name of the British Queen "CHARLES III" and the letters "D.G.REX.F.D". These are the abbreviation of the Latin lettering "Dei Gratia Rex Fidei Defensor", which translates as "By the Grace of God King, Defender of the Faith".
