At the beginning, the Australian gold coin presented a gold nugget on the motif side, but sales were far from reaching the expectations of the mint Perth Mint. Instead of discontinuing the coin series, the mint decided in 1990 to keep the name Australian Nugget, but to select a kangaroo as the motif, and thus one of the continent's characteristic animals, which changes annually. The attempt proved to be extremely successful.

Incidentally, the Australia Kangaroo Gold Coin is often misspelled and referred to as Australia Kangaroo, this is no longer correct since the spelling reform.

Recognized as official currency in Australia

Since the Australia Currency Act in 1965, all minted bullion gold coins are considered legal tender.

All the important features of the Australian Gold Coin Series

The Perth Mint has been in charge of producing all Australian gold coins, silver coins, platinum coins and palladium coins since 1987. The Australia Kangaroo series is still minted today at the same historic location as the first British Sovereign coins were back in 1899. At that time, the mint was operated by the Royal Mint (London) as a branch in Perth.

Australia as a global player on the international gold market

Australia has already experienced the "Gold Rush" three times. First in the 1850s when the first large gold discoveries were recorded in the eastern states and then also in the west of the country during the 1890s. Most recently, Down Under experienced a national gold rush in the 1980s. In 2012, gold output was a whopping 250 tons.

The Australia gold coins as an investment

Since the designs on the coin are slightly changed every year and a new edition appears, the limited production gold coins are also called collector coins.

Large bullion coins

Only at the Perth mint are 1kg, 10 ounce and 2 ounce bullion coins produced. The large coins were first released in 1991 and the 1kg gold coin was the largest precious metal coin of the last century, which was also authorized as legal tender.

Matte effect on the Australian coin series

Since 1987, Australian bullion coins have had a matte finish. This matte finish is a beautiful mostly milky effect used to distinguish the proof coins from the circulation coins. On proof coins, the design on the coin is matte, while on circulation coins, the background is matte and the foreground is shiny.

Highest purity gold bullion coins

The purity of Australian gold coins is 99.99%at 24 carats. Each coin is individually packed in a protective acrylic box to prevent damage during transport or storage.

Limited quantity

The Australian Kangaroo and Australian Lunar Series are produced in limited quantities only, as they are intended for purchase by gold investors.

The History of the Australian Series

On April 23, 1987, the Australian Nugget bullion coins of 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, ¼ ounce and 1/10 ounce were unveiled by then Australian Prime Minister R.J Hawke in Sydney. During the years from 1987 to 189, the Australian gold nugget (as an international symbol of gold) was struck on the reverse of the gold coins of those denominations. Each of the 4 coin denominations featured a different gold nugget.

The Australian Kangaroo Series, once Australian Nugget

In 1990, the coin still bore the name Australian Nugget, although from then on, instead of the nugget, a kangaroo was minted on the bullion coin to symbolize Australia and the continent's diverse flora and fauna. Since then, the kangaroo symbol has been retained on the gold coins, with only slight annual changes.

in 2008, the inscription on all gold coins of denominations of 1 oz or less was changed to "Australia Kangaroo", as the coins had already been colloquially referred to as such for some time due to the kangaroo symbol. The inscription on the 1 kg coin was changed accordingly in 2011.

Largest gold coin in the world is the golden kangaroo

Nugget

The masterpiece of a 1 ton gold coin can be viewed as an impressive exhibit by visitors to the Perth Mint. This solid gold coin was produced by the Perth Mint in 2011 to demonstrate innovation, ingenuity and, most importantly, the coin maker's world-class technical skills.

1kg gold coin

The one ton coin was officially unveiled by Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett on October 26, 2011 and has an incredible value of 1 million Australian dollars (equivalent to approximately 700.00 euros). The amount of gold processed is about 32150.7 troy ounces.
