Underneath the castle you can see a key and below it you can read the motto of Gibraltar. It reads "MONTIS INSIGNIA CALPE". Translated this means "In the sign of the Calpe mountain". The castle and the key are meant to remind us that Gibraltar, due to its location, was the key to the Mediterranean .
