The meat and hide of the horned giants were used as the first means of payment between the Indians and the whites. It was not until 1872 that the first attempt was made to save this species from extinction. With the establishment of Yellowstone National Park, 21 bison were given a safe reserve in which they could successfully reproduce. Today, the number of bison worldwide is estimated at about 1 million. However, the buffalo is still considered potentially endangered today.

The 1 oz American Buffalo gold coin is one of the purest gold coins in the world, with a fineness of 999.9 / 1,000. The fine weight is 31.10 g and the diameter is 32.70 mm. The coin is 2.95 mm thick and the edge of the coin is fluted. The face value is $50, but the actual value is determined according to the daily gold rate and is significantly higher. The designs on the obverse and reverse of the 1 oz American Gold Buffalo are by sculptor James Earle Fraser (1876 - 1953).

The obverse depicts an Indian wearing a feather headdress. "LIBERTY" is stamped on the upper right edge. The year of minting can be discovered  at the bottom of the neck of the Indian portrait. 

Reverse of the 1 oz American Buffalo Coin 2023

The reverse shows a bison and was appropriately named for the gold coins. Above the bison, "United States of America" is stamped on the edge. Between the top edge inscription and the back of the buffalo on the left side is "E Pluribus Unum" which translates to "Out of Many One". This refers to the different states of America, which together represent America. On the left under the head of the buffalo is stamped "In God we trust". The face value of "$50" can be seen directly below the buffalo on the gold coin and at the bottom is the fine weight and fineness "1 OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD".
